Correspondance: Heavy metals from donor blood and breast milk products in the NICU Pediatric Research 2022; https://doi.org/10.1038/s41390-021-01501-x

The fragile state of premature infants requires different forms of supplementation. Among them, blood transfusions and the use of donor’s breast milk (DBM) are crucial for many babies to survive. For instance, blood transfusions are often required to ameliorate anemia of prematurity. In addition, because of the indispensable nutritional and immunological importance of breast milk, in addition to mother’s milk, infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) often are supplemented with DBM.
